Baby Gear on a Budget - Where NOT to Compromise For a Good Price

A first time mom on a budget has many decisions to make about what baby gear is necessary and what is not. One trip to the nearest Babies R Us is all that it will take to make her dizzy with dollar signs and choices. There are so many items that babies "need". They make something for just about everything and you truly could spend a fortune if you fall for every proposed baby need. The truth is that there are many items worth paying a pretty penny for and many that you can easily do without and "make do" in a less expensive or free way. The following are categories of items that should not be compromised without or settled upon for the cheapest. They are what mainly effect the safety of the child such as a good car seat and baby-proofing your house. A few other high dollar items should be invested in as sometimes the cheaper items break and it will end up costing more to replace them.

Convertible Crib And Changer

When purchasing a car seat, it is important to read crash test ratings and reviews. Britax is a pricey but top of the line seat when it comes to safety. Firefighters recommend a Britax as they are tested in Europe at higher speeds in crash tests and have true side impact protection. Regardless which brand you choose, make sure it is installed properly and securely as well. Choosing a convertible car seat for your infant that will have room for a child up to 65 pounds will also save money over purchasing an infant seat that will be outgrown in a few months.

Convertible Crib And Changer

A lightweight umbrella stroller is a better investment than one of those giant travel systems that come with infant seats. The infant seat will be soon outgrown and the stroller is so wide and bulky you will not want to put it in the car, travel with it and use it for trips to the mall. Choosing a high quality umbrella stroller is key though. They are not all created equal! One with back support for your child that still executes an umbrella fold is far superior to the flimsy fabric ones that provide no support and that do not recline for stroller naps and diaper changing. The Maclaren Quest is a pricey but excellent option and is worth every extra penny. The strong frame is not flimsy and is super sturdy and the extendable leg rest allows for your baby's feet to not hang on the ground. The five point harness also ensures safety and security for your little wiggle worm. This stroller will work for your infant as well if you add an infant body support into it such as the JJ Cole Body Support. Cheap umbrella strollers are more prone to breaking with heavy use, so investing in a good one for long term use is worth it.

Do not skimp as well when baby proofing your house. You DO need outlet covers and gates to create safe, baby proof spaces. Even if you cannot ensure perfect safety everywhere, it is a must to create a space that is fully baby proofed that your baby is enclosed into. Put up a baby gate at one room with no TV's and wires and and that has a rug or carpet. Make this the go-to safe play spot that you feel comfortable walking away from to change your load of laundry etc. If you do not have a safe spot in your house you need to have a play pen (pack and play) to place your child to keep them safe. It only takes an instant for your child to endanger their life. Babies can drown in less than one inch of water including toilets and empty flower pots that have a bit of rain water at the bottom. If you have a pool it is absolutely imperative to have a safety gate. You do not have control of every situation that will arise and if another person where to let your child out of the house it only takes seconds for them to drown.

A breast pump is a divided issue as some women go back to work and pump every day for their child. Others are home and usually just breast feed. So your need for a good quality breast pump will depend on how often you use it. If you plan on pumping every day, multiple times per day you will be more successful in continuing to breast feed by investing in a good electric double-sided pump that makes pumping quick ad easy and will not break. The cheaper single, hand-held pumps take longer and break easier but work fine for the woman who only pumps on the rare occasion that a babysitter will be giving one bottle.

Which Baby Crib

If you're in the market for a baby crib make sure it meets all the minimum safety standards. As with your baby's car safety seat your baby' crib will be one of the most important purchases you will make.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Your baby's crib will be your baby's sanctuary over the early months with your newborn spending many hours in his crib. A crib is somewhere where your baby should feel safe and secure and a place that you feel comfortable to leave him.

Convertible Crib And Changer

There is such a choice in baby cribs that trying to decide which baby crib to buy can prove quite a challenging task. It's best to try and narrow your choice down by first deciding what type of baby crib you want to buy. For example do you want a wood baby crib or an iron crib, are you looking for something unique or are functionality and price more important.

Decide whether or not you want drop down sides. Baby cribs come with single and double drop down sides or you might decide you aren't bothered about having drop down sides at all. If your baby's crib is going to be positioned against a wall then having both sides of the crib that can be dropped down is a waste but one side is good for most parents as it makes it easier to lift your baby in and out of the crib.

You might decide to go for a crib that converts into a toddler bed or perhaps a seat. Such a change in functionality comes at a cost and you often need to buy a kit to convert your baby's crib. It's a nice concept but quite expensive and not necessarily worth it especially if you are considering having another baby at a later date.

Most cribs come with an adjustable mattress so you can higher it to place your baby into the crib and lower it to help prevent your baby from getting out. An adjustable mattress is a nice to have but as with most things decent functionality costs and so you probably need to head up the price range for your baby's crib to make sure you get a mattress that works well. Go for a metal spring system if you can.

Once you have decided what type of crib you want and have established a price range which you can afford then it's time to check out what cribs are around. The internet is a good place to start as it saves hours on your feet and gives you a good feel as to the type and make of crib you want to buy. Internet stores also offer you some of the keenest prices around so even if you've found that dream baby crib in town check out the internet to see if you can beat the price, you usually can.

Bratt décor have a good range of baby cribs providing you with a complete choice from wood to iron and basic to designer. All the iron cribs are forged by hand. If you want a carved crib, a hand painted crib or that little something that is totally unique you will find it in the Bratt Décor range along with a wide and stunning selection of beautiful nursery furniture. The Bratt Décor range was born out of the founder's love of children and it certainly shows in their beautiful selection of baby cribs.

Angel Line manufacture a wide variety of wooden cribs all of which meet the required safety standards. Every rectangular baby crib is made of solid hardwood, drop one side, have four position mattress brackets, safety metal hardware, easy roll castors with break and use a standard size baby crib mattress. Angel Line offer a variety of three in one convertible cribs (crib, toddler bed and full size bed), sleigh cribs, continental cribs, traditional cribs and heirloom cribs.

DaVinci do a great range of stylish baby cribs at great prices. They offer a choice of baby cribs, dressers and changing tables for every nursery. The Emily Convertible crib is a popular choice, it converts to a toddler bed and then a full size bed and features an adjustable four level mattress spring system.

Convertible Baby Cribs - How to Know If It's Worth It

With all the innovations that are happening to every stuff we see like big computers suddenly turned into small iPads and the walkman turned into really small MP3 players, it's not surprising to see that even the crib has its share of innovation. The traditional crib we used to know so well now have a convertible version.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Convertible cribs are not very hard to understand. It's a lot like the regular baby crib, except that it can be turned into a toddler bed, a day bed and a full- size bed.

Convertible Crib And Changer

There are two basic types of convertible cribs. There's the 2 in 1 type that can be turned into a toddler bed and a day bed, and there's the 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 that can be turned into toddler bed, day bed and full- size double bed-basically the complete package.

People have different opinions on whether buying a convertible crib is worth it. A lot of people seem to have an issue with the price. Since buying a convertible crib is like buying three furnitures in one, the price is a bit higher than a regular baby crib. There's also the question of whether you'd even get to use the crib until your baby turns into a teenager. Teenagers have the need to make their own decision, especially when it comes to how their room looks. What's cute today may not be very appealing for your teenage daughter, and a change in furniture may be needed in the future.

In order to determine if buying a convertible crib is the best choice for you, ask yourselves these questions:
• Am I willing to stick with the furniture for the years to come? Don't I easily get bored with how my furniture looks?
• Do I plan to buy another crib in case a new baby comes along? Or do I want to have a crib that could serve as an heirloom?
• Am I willing to pay extra to have furniture that I could possibly get bored with?
Answering these questions will help you decide if a convertible crib is the best option for you and for your baby. Just think about it carefully and I'm sure you'd be able to make the best decision for you.

Microfiber Cleaning Cloth

Cloth Vs Disposable Diapers - Are Baby Cloth Diapers Worth It?

There is a lot to decide on when your about to have a baby. We all wonder what's going to be best for our little ones when it comes to raising them. Will I breast feed or go with a bottle? Should we put our baby to sleep in a crib or bassinet? Are we going to diaper our baby with cloth diapers or disposable diapers?

Convertible Crib And Changer

Usually we go with what makes the most sense, and what will fit in with our lifestyle. When I was pregnant with my son I did some research on the Cloth Vs. Disposable debate and came up with a pros and cons list that really helped me out.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Let's start with the pros of disposable diapers!

1. Easy to use

This is a huge plus if your a busy family and are always on the go. Disposable diapers can be used anywhere at anytime without having to worry about finding a washer to clean soiled cloth diapers!

2. You can throw them away

Once your little one has done his or her business and needs to be changed, just take the dirty diaper off (after changing your baby of course) and throw it out. No smelly diaper to carry around with you!

3. Less Leaking...Less accidents

Disposable diapers are much more absorbent than cloth diapers. With that said more liquid is absorbed and your little one is less likely to get a rash. Not to mention you wont have to change as many diapers.

4. Cost

If you plan on diapering your bundle of joy using only cloth diapers with no covers there really isn't much of a difference in cost. If you consider using a diaper service or home laundering, it can be cheaper to use cloth diapers. However, diapering your baby without using diaper covers is risky due to possible leaking.

You must also consider there are diaper covers and various styles to think about with cloth. To get all the cute designs and top rated cloth diapers you may actually spend up to 50% more on cloth diapers.

As you can see there are a lot of pros to using disposable diapers, of course there are some cons, and here they are...

1. Bad for the environment

While disposable diapers are easy to use they also hurt the environment. Every year there are billions of disposable diapers thrown away which directly impacts our environment.

2. Potentially Harmful

There have been studies done on children who have used disposable diapers. Some of these studies have found that disposable diapers may cause male infertility and possible instances of asthma.

3. Functionality

Disposable diapers are just that, disposable. Once they are used you throw them out never to be used again. With cloth diapers you can use them for years to come. They can be used around the house as dust cloths or rags, burp cloths or even washcloths.

Let's talk about some cloth diapers pros shall we!

1. Environmentally Friendly

Cloth diapers are 100% reusable (as long as you take care of them and wash them well). With that being said you can reduce the amount of pollution going to our landfills by reusing your cloth diapers, and in return you will be helping to better our environment.

2. Less expensive to maintain

It may cost more at first to get started with cloth diapers, however in the long run it is much cheaper to maintain. After the initial cost of getting the diapers, pins and the covers all you need to do is wash, dry, fold, use and repeat. Cloth diapers will last about a year with good care, so you will never have to worry about making a diaper run in the middle of the night like with disposable diapers.

3. Comfortable for you babies bottom

Unlike disposable diapers, cloth diapers are usually made of cotton, hemp, bamboo or microfiber. These materials are much more comfortable and are normally a bit more gentle on your little ones bottom. Some children may be allergic to the dyes or chemicals in disposables so cloth may be the way to go.

4. Oh so cute diaper covers

There are so many different diaper covers out there these days it's hard to decide on just one. Good news, you don't have to! With all the different brands and companies around you can choose almost any different pattern, color, design or fabric you can think of. This makes diapering your child more of a fun experience rather than just something that needs to be done.

There are some cons to using cloth diapers, so let's take a look at what those are...

1. Supply and demand

Whether we like it or not babies need to be changed a lot. With the use of cloth diapers comes a few more loads of laundry to do as well.

Remember that if you do not wash cloth diapers in a timely manner it may be tough to remove stains from soiled areas. This means that you will need to do laundry more often to ensure that you have diapers ready at all times.

2. Not as absorbent

Cloth diapers are not as absorbent as most disposable diapers. This usually isn't a big deal except at night and when on road trips. At night you will find your self getting up regularly just to check your little ones diaper and see if it's wet. You wouldn't want to have to change a soaked diaper, pj's and bedding would you? At this point you may opt to use cloth diapers during the day and disposables at night.

3. Less sanitary

If you're not consistently near a sterile pot of boiling water or a washer and dryer you may have a problem keeping things sanitary. You don't want to put that soiled diaper in your diaper bag with formula, extra clothes and toys. Not handling cloth diapers properly, and making sure they are cleaned and stored correctly can cause contamination and make you and your family sick.

So there's the low down on using cloth diapers vs. disposable diapers. I found all of this information to be very helpful and it really did help me make up my mind on how to diaper my son. The most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong answer!

When it comes to choosing which way to diaper your baby, it's really what works best for you and your family!

Getting to Know You! - Helpful Advice on Integrating Your New Baby Into the Family

So, you've had a new baby, and no doubt you'll be going through all kinds of emotions. The nursery decoration is all done, the baby bedding is in place, you've gone through the birth, and now you've brought your baby home. While there are lots of changes going on, you'll want to do your best to make the transition easy for both of you. This is a magical and an intensely personal time for you, your partner and your new baby. Here is a look at how you can welcome your new baby into your home.

Convertible Crib And Changer

First of all, you need to make sure that you both have plenty of time to rest. Try to rest while your baby is napping. As you are integrating into your home and life, you'll need plenty of rest and sleep, especially after going through labor. Given that looking after a young baby means having less sleep than usual, it is no surprise that mothers often feel they have no energy. Your body needs to rest and if you are both rested, it will make everything less stressful for you. Make sure your baby is comfortable and that the baby bedding is safe and comfortable so he'll sleep as much as possible and give you time to sleep.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Try to plan on staying home for awhile especially during the cold weather, new babies should be kept warm and relatively germ free, so try and avoid taking the baby out at least for the first couple of weeks. This way you can have some time for each other. If you need to go out, make the trips short. You'll both be stressed if you end up going out in large groups or for long periods of time. Try to avoid any house work for the first few days or weeks so you and your baby have quality time together, you can get to know each other really well, which of course also helps with the important bonding process.

Making sure you have everything you need in the nursery before you get home with baby, will make it less stressful too. Try and ensure that when you do the nursery decoration that you get everything you need. You'll need a crib, a mattress, blankets, wipes, nappies, a small bath for a baby, burp rags, outfits that are easy to remove, and a good safe changing table, and perhaps a comfortable chair for those precious snuggly moments with your new baby. If you have all these things on hand, the transition will definitely be a lot smoother.

Understand that postpartum depression occurs to many women and is very common among new mothers to experience a period of 'low' moods. This can range in severity from a mild and normal period of mood disturbance, sometimes called 'baby blues' this is so common that it can be considered normal. Symptoms include being weepy, irritability, anxiety and feeling low. It usually starts around the 3rd day, but usually goes by the 10th day after childbirth. This depression may make it more difficult for you to bond with your baby. If you think you are having any of the symptoms that come along with this problem, talk to your doctor so you can get help straight away, help from your doctor can aid you through this time and make it easier for you, your partner and your baby.

There is more to bringing your baby home than just the baby's nursery decoration and picking out cute baby bedding. Your whole life is going to change when your baby comes home, but if you prepare yourself well and learn how to properly get to know your baby, then this can be the most rewarding, special time you'll ever have, enjoy introducing this brand new little person to your home, your family and friends, but most of all, to your heart.

4 Money Saving Tips for New Moms

A new baby brings lots of joy and excitement to a family. It also brings lots of new expenses for diapers, food, clothing and medical costs. This can equate to a drastic change in the financial situation of the family.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Moms will scramble to find ways to save money, so that they can make the family's income stretch as far as possible. There are lots of ways, but some are easier to do consistently. Here are some of the best things that moms can do when they are making room for their new baby:

Convertible Crib And Changer

1. Clip Coupons: Coupons have certainly made a comeback in a major way, and more moms are using them than ever before. With the economy getting worse, clipping coupons has become necessary in order for the average family to make ends meet. There are several ways to collect coupons. Moms can collect coupons by collecting the Sunday newspaper circulars. They can also find coupons on the internet. Many moms belong to couponing forums. You can join coupon clipping websites or go to manufacturer's websites and Facebook pages to find coupons.

2. Buy Second-Hand Items: Buying "second-hand" almost seemed synonymous with poverty a few years ago, but now it's almost trendy. There are consignment stores cropping up everywhere and they won't accept torn, stained or broken items. There are lots of name brand clothes and popular baby gear to be had in these shops. You will find nice cribs, toys, bouncy chairs, Peg Perego high chairs, strollers by Maclaren and Joovy, snow gear, nursing items and the list goes on. Take the leap and check one out, you might be surprised at what you find.

3. Check your local Craigslist "Free Stuff" section: Anytime someone moves out it seems like there are lots of items they can't take with them. You can find the most amazing things being given away for free, and the kicker is you are also doing them a favor by hauling it away. Items are often large furniture items, décor and the like. Save some big bucks on these items by getting them from the free classifieds. Word of caution: be careful not to put yourself in danger by going into a stranger's house alone. Take a friend or spouse with you. Often times, free items are left curbside and there is no need to go inside.

4. This one may seem counter-intuitive: Buy high quality baby gear

Yes, when shopping for baby gear, you will save yourself hundreds of dollars by choosing products that will last for several years. Avoid buying items that will only be used for a few months or for a short period of time. For example, every new mom needs a stroller. Having a newborn, you really need a stroller that holds the infant carrier too. But maybe you are also planning to have more kids within a few years. If so, you really should consider purchasing a stroller that will accommodate your plans. They make these tandem strollers that have a seat in front for a baby or infant carrier and a standing platform and seat in the rear for an older sibling. These strollers are a little more expensive than a regular stroller, but you will only have to buy one and it will be useful to you for several years.

The same goes for cribs. If you can, buy a convertible crib that converts to a toddler bed. They too are a little more expensive, but not by that much. Plus, you will really save a bundle by not having to buy a second bed in the future.

They are now making convertible high chairs as well. They start off as a high chair and convert to a booster when the child is older. Buying these types of products saves hundreds of dollars in the long run and are well worth the investment. Not only will you have these items for a long time but they are quality products that will last better than cheap ones.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways for moms to save money. With a little research, effort and creative thinking, you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars on items for the kids.

What's The Difference Between A Bassinet And A Crib

Bassinets are usually the number one choice for most new parents. They are generally used during the first 6 months of a baby's life. They are often more like baskets than a full on crib. This makes them more portable and versatile than a crib could be. Bassinets are light weight and usually have caster wheels so you can move the it from room to room without disturbing your sleeping baby. They are designed with a wide base and a very stable construction. These are great for parents who travel a lot, live in a house with more than one floor, or are very active in their day to day lives. Bassinets are easy to apply themes to and many are available to purchase with specific themes. Bassinets are often considered a luxury item, since an infant usually only uses one for the first few months. A neat feature about some of them is that they are portable, making it easy to take with you when you are visiting family or friends. Bassinets are a wonderful place for your newborn to sleep closely to you during the first couple months. They are easy to get your newborn in and out of. They can either be purchased or custom made to fit the requirements and tastes of the parents. Parents need to be aware that there are similarities between bassinets and cribs but they use different mattresses, sheets, and bedding.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Cribs are made to be a stationary enclosure that can adapt with the baby as he or she grows and becomes more mobile. They are usually more economical since the baby can use it from infancy to two years. Cribs tend to be made out of heavier materials such as wood. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes with a larger variety of features. In a nursery, the crib has the longest life span because of its durability. Some can even convert to toddler beds using the same mattress. A good crib, you will find, is a place where you can keep your baby safe while sleeping or taking some time for yourself. Cribs come with bars to make sure the baby does not climb out. You can also do this by lowering the floor. They should be kept sturdy and intact prevent it from rolling over. Older cribs very likely will not have the safety features required of cribs manufactured today. Although you might pay more, a new crib is well worth having for the reason alone that it is up to date on safety standards.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Bassinets are typically the first thing a parent will buy. It is a way to get their newborn around for the first 6 months while in a safe surrounding. As the baby grows they transition over to a crib. The crib is meant to be in one place. Cribs will be the babies home from about 6 months to two years. During this time the baby will turn into an infant and will want to start climbing out. You can change the settings on the crib and with the bassinet you cannot.

Buying Baby Furniture While Using Common Sense

First time parents are often excited about the prospect of decorating and fixing up that special nursery. Then they go to buy those wonderful pieces of baby furniture they have been dreaming about and realize that they are more expensive than they first thought. Yes, baby furniture can be expensive that is why the frugal first time parent will not only put a little thought behind what he/she buys, but also will use some common sense.

Convertible Crib And Changer

Common sense plays an important role because it is easy to become swept into the trap of first time parenthood. They want the best for their future baby and they think (as the salespeople, advertisements, etc also strays them into thinking) that the only way to give their baby the best is by buying the best baby furniture and by buying every perceivable piece they can find. For example, there are strollers that sell for 0. What do these strollers have that the 0 variety doesn't have? They have a few extra compartments, maybe an extra place to store baby's bottle. They also are made from more expensive materials, not better materials, just more expensive materials. Are the 0 strollers safer than the 0 ones, no? The same story applies to cribs, changing tables, etc.

Convertible Crib And Changer

What else should a soon to be parent think about when it is time to start buying baby furniture? Here are a few suggestions, to help you save money and to help you make some better decisions.

* Think about the furniture you really need. Changing tables are a must in most homes. But not all parents will actually use them. Do you have a bad back? Will it be hard to change baby on the bed? Have you changed any diapers on a changing table in the past? Do you think you will actually use it? If you think you will, then the table is a must buy. Now when looking at these tables think about the kind that you want? Do you want one that is attached to baby's crib? Is there room for one? Do you want one with a lot of drawers? These will come in handy, especially if you are lacking drawer space.

* Bassinets. These are cute. But realistically, they are usually only used for a few months. If you really find a great deal on one and have the money to spare, then you might want to splurge. If not, you and baby will survive. They are really nice because they are movable and you can take them right into your own bedroom. But again, they are not a must have.

* Cribs are a must have. When buying these your first concern is safety. Look at all the recall lists before purchasing. Also look for safety features yourself. It is okay to spend more on this item. It is worth the extra money to keep baby safe and secure.

* Dressers. Again, these will depend on your space and budget. Yes, cute little dressers do make baby's room look more complete. But if your money is tight, you can make do for now.

* A rocking chair. These are always nice, especially for those nights when baby has trouble sleeping. They don't necessarily have to be in baby's room. If you don't have the space to spare, set one up in your living room.

One great way to save money on baby's furniture is to shop at discount stores, resell shops or even buy used from friends and acquaintances. Just remember to watch for dents, sharp edges, peeling paint and things like that when buying used and still check all recall lists.

Buying baby furniture is an important job and it is one that requires you to use some common sense. Remember once baby is born you will have many other ways in which you will need to spend your money.

Our Experience With Infant Reflux

Congratulations! It's a bouncing, cooing, crying, and vomiting baby boy! Vomiting? Wait a second, newborns aren't supposed to vomit. Unfortunately, many babies spit up in excess and many also vomit what appears to be the majority of his or her meals. Most likely, these symptoms are caused by a condition called infant reflux.

Convertible Crib And Changer

When our first son was born a little over four years ago, he would spit up in small amounts after each nursing session. It was shortly after I stopped nursing him and started bottles of breast milk and formula that he began to vomit after each feeding. Not only did it terrify my husband and me when it first happened, our son also appeared uncomfortable after each feeding. I began to question myself over stopping what had been a horrible nursing experience. Perhaps I had now caused my son to experience this vomiting. I had no idea what was happening with him.

Convertible Crib And Changer

We quickly made a doctor's appointment after the first vomiting episode. Our doctor, sensing our first-time parent anxiousness about the situation, began asking us several questions about our son. How often did he vomit? Was he uncomfortable during feedings and after? Did he often cry for no apparent reason? Did he seem to dislike laying flat on his back?

We answered each question, wondering where she was going with the information. Our son literally would projectile vomit shortly after each meal. When we fed him, he often reared up his little legs and grunted, as if uncomfortable. He cried for a few hours each night. He wouldn't sleep if laid flat on his back; he actually slept best when in his baby swing. After writing down our answers and asking a few more questions, our doctor shared with us that it sounded like our son may be one of the up to 50 percent of infants who had something called infant reflux.

Most infant's experience a bit of reflux, our doctor shared with us that our son's was a bit more excessive than other infants with reflux, because he was vomiting after each meal. She also explained that because our son was born at 35 weeks, he was one of the 85 percent of premature infants who develop reflux. It was actually a relief to us to learn this condition had a name, and that it was quite common. Our next question to her was, "What do we do about this reflux?"

We were told that reflux is most likely caused by a valve in the stomach not closing properly after feedings, most likely from a baby's immature digestive system. This valve, when not functioning correctly, causes what is in the baby's tummy to back up into the esophagus, which causes pain for the baby. Many infants with reflux find eating uncomfortable, thus causing them to rear up his or her legs as if in pain. Reflux infants also do not like to be laid flat on their backs, most likely because when laid flat, the food does not stay in the babies tummies, instead it travels back up.

Once we knew this information, we were able to start changing some things to help improve our son's reflux. To begin with, I quickly switched bottles. I found a bottle that was more like a little bit of heaven in a plastic container; a bottle called Dr. Brown's. These bottles are specifically made for a baby who experiences colic or gas, and are made by a doctor whose own child had colic. These bottles help a baby experience less gas in the tummy, thus making for a much happier baby.

We learned to feed our son in smaller, more frequent increments. Not feeding our son huge amounts of formula at a time, allowed for smaller amounts of food going into his belly, which helped alleviate a bellyache. Another important change we made was to stop laying our son down immediately after eating a bottle. Instead we kept him propped up for at least 20 minutes after each feeding. This helped gravity work by keeping his food in his tummy, where it belonged.

We still allowed our son to nap in his swing, but we also elevated the end of his crib slightly for sleeping. Just making this small change helped our son's sleep habits improve tremendously. Because he wasn't laid completely flat when sleeping, which can cause reflux babies to be uncomfortable, he slept much better and much more comfortably.

Our doctor explained that because our son was gaining weight well, even though he had been vomiting after each feeding, she didn't want to try medication until we tried some of the other lifestyle changes first. We did all of the suggestions she recommended, and while they worked, he still seemed a bit unhappy after each feeding and was still rearing his legs. The vomiting, while still occurring, honestly didn't bother him. Our doctor did finally recommend that our son take Zantac to help. The lifestyle changes, along with the Zantac, made a world of difference in our son.

Like most infants who experience reflux, our son outgrew his by the time he turned one. Some infants continue to have problems past the one-year mark; the majority of those are children with severe cases of reflux. Many times a sibling born to a reflux brother or sister is also diagnosed with it. Our second child was no different. He was born spitting. The exception with our second child, besides much more calm parents, was that he was the happiest spitter on the block. He would spit up, no vomiting, and continue on with his day. He wasn't uncomfortable. He was just a happy spitter!
